Well, you see, normal children, human children and babies of most species can't really take care of themselves.

They need someone to make their food because they don't know how, they need someone to give them rules or else they hurt themselves, and they need someone to protect them because they aren't strong enough.

Most of all, they need someone to teach them how to do all of that, so that when they are old enough, they can take care of themselves.
